Ritten in South Tyrol

Ritten is the name of the high plateau region which spreads over an area of 111 square kilometres between the Eisack and Talfer rivers in the heart of South Tyrol. The mountain ridge lies north of Bozen/Bolzano, the main city in that region, and the villages Klobenstein, Lengmoos, Oberbozen, Unterinn, Oberinn, Mittelberg, Lengstein and Wangen lie at a height between 800 and 1,500 metres.

7,350 inhabitants live on the Ritten and the economic balance has been kept between farming, trade and tourist sectors. The Ritten has been a tourist area for 400 years, now. It was here that the people from Bozen invented summer holidays. Guests, people from Bozen/Bolzano and the locals all like the Ritten, the local mountain for the capital of the region and a popular destination for hikers, families and individual tourists. The summer holiday tradition "par excellence" together with a whole lot of natural beauty spots await the enthusiast of this climatically special place which has always offered inspiration and a refreshing change not only for artists and philosophers.

What distinguishes the Ritten is the wide variety of possibilities in view of its various altitudes; wine can be grown on the slopes above Bozen up to a height of 1,000 metres, whereas on the higher areas, extensive woods and meadows predominate the scenery. Over 1,500 metres, the scenery changes to alpine vegetation and mountain pastures.

The Dolomites

The Ritten is the ideal holiday paradise for people who know how to enjoy life - up here the hiker can enjoy a superb view of the spellbinding Dolomites which on the southern side of the high plateau appear from their most beautiful angle. The Dolomites are a range of mountains of the Southern Limestone Alps and are spread out between the Italian regions of Trient-South Tyrol and Venetien, and approximately to the same extent in the provinces South Tyrol, Belluno and Trentino. The highest mountain in the Dolomites is the Marmolata. Other well-known massifs are the "Drei Zinnen", the "Sella", the "Rosengarten" and the "Langkofelgruppe".
